iFrame height resizing, responsive design techniques.

My current project required me to work with responsive design.  One task was to setup an iframe that was capable of dynamic height based on the contents of the iframe.  We did have a little control of the parent and the child content, and I thought this would be a pretty easy.

After some trial and error and a lot of google-fu I found a solution using easyXDM.  It seemed to work pretty well and was able to work across different browsers.  However, the solution was pretty heavy, weighing in at just over 21kb embedded on the parent site.

A coworker of mine brought up a more streamline solution that pulled out all the goodness of what easyXDM was doing and put it into a script at around 2kb.

The script uses postMessage transport for more current browsers.  Then falls back to a hash tag solution for browsers that don’t support postMessage option.

I cleaned it up and put it out on github.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

Coming Soon to a Smartphone Near You: Ubuntu

The popular open-source operating system Ubuntu is coming to smartphones.

Canonical, Ubuntu’s commercial sponsor, announced its new smartphone interface Tuesday. The company will be holding a press call later this afternoon, and showing off the OS at CES.

This isn’t Ubuntu’s first foray into devices outside of the desktop. Over the last few years, Canonical has spent time investing in Ubuntu for TV sets and building out its cloud infrastructure. Over the last 18 months, Ubuntu has shifted into integrating more touch-friendly controls and better touchscreen support into Ubuntu on the desktop.

With Ubuntu for phones, it appears that Canonical wants to offer OEMs an alternative to Android on both the high and low ends of the market. Canonical is also going to target the enterprise, where it can offer corporate customers a way to offer thin-client, PC and phone functionality from one profile.

Although manufacturers and carrier partners haven’t been announced, the company expects the first devices to ship in early 2014.

Ubuntu for phones joins Sailfish and Samsung’s Bada as operating systems looking to take on the giant that is Android.

What do you make of the Ubuntu announcement? Is there enough room in the market for another player? Let us know in the comments.
